Readers 14 and under are saying…

If it were close to my birthday, this book would be something I’d want my mom or dad to give me.—Clare M-S., 10, Webster City, Iowa

Really cool! I really liked it and I know a bunch of friends who would, too. It has the right amount of description and action and it moves fast enough. It has a lot of potential for cliffhangers.Avery K., 13, Redmond, Washington

I liked everything about it. The book has an effect of feeling like you are in the cave with them; it is very descriptive. I would want my parents to get it for me.—Gracella M., 11, Portland, Oregon

It was good. I enjoyed reading it. I think I would listen to it as a (recorded) book.—Carter B., 14, Escondido, California

I really liked the different types of dragons. Some of the words were a little hard, but I figured it out as I kept going. I really liked it.—Delaney B., 11, Escondido, California

I love that the story is set in modern times, with people interacting with the dragons. I like the mistcrystal and its power to befriend dragons. I do not like the shiftcrystal, specifically that it can (spoiler)! I very much want to read more.—John P., 10, Colorado Springs, Colorado

I think it’s cool the hero is a girl. I wanted to keep reading to find out what’s going to happen next.—Miguel B., 13, Escondido, California

I really liked it! I would definitely read more. And I would like to get a “Diana” Halloween costume.—Tiffany S., 12, Escondido, California

I'm having so much fun reading my novel aloud over FB Live (link in bio). Before a recent installment, I shared what I'm currently reading: the crazy-good sci-fi fantasy *The City We Became* by N.K. Jemisin. From the start, I've been hooked by her fast-paced yet epic style, and her mind-bending story.

As we shelter-in-place during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have all experienced how our physical "social distancing" can turn into too much social/emotional distance and isolation.

To help us take back the dragon magic and connect with each other, I'll read my novel, *Diana's Dragons: The Awaited* aloud over Facebook Live. We'll connect my home, your home, and the homes of everyone else who joins us.

I'll read the entire book in installments of about 15 minutes each day, starting Friday, April 10th, 2020 at 1:30 p.m. Pacific.

Don't worry if you start late or miss some live reading! Recordings will available in the videos section on this page as well as on www.dianasdragons.com. Or you can just scroll back on this page and find all the installments!

I'm very excited to share the adventures of our hero, Diana Santos, and her Dragonkin with all of you. I hope you enjoy the book!

Be well and may your dragon heartfires blaze!
    -J.R.

P.S. *Diana's Dragons: The Awaited* is considered "middle grade fantasy," the same genre and audience as the Harry Potter series.

As Wellness Coordinator for a program for folks who live with HIV/AIDS, I report to work during the Covid-19 Shelter In Place order (in California). Still writing the sequel, and currently inspired to mold some of the characters and events according to the ways many are coming together from our separate places during this crisis. #grateful #LoveTheWorld #StayWellEveryone #CreatingDuringCrisis ...

I have not yet reached my goal of 57,000 words on book 2, *Diana's Dragons: The Stolen*. And it's okay. What *has* happened: I've had a plot breakthrough concerning my heroes, and filled in the elusive motivations and back-story of my villain. That doesn't get a lot of content into the draft, but it feels like the book has been a frozen river–sparkling frost over sheer, unyielding, gray-white planes. Now the sun has met the ice enough (and I have hacked at it in places) that the waters have begun their move. It's a precarious place full of jagged slabs and bits of sleet, all bobbing in churning waters. The swirling chills and warming lead me to feel the invitation of the flow. So I'll proceed cautiously toward 55,000 words this month and keep a look-out for progress in the coming spring.
